Day 88 – VHF radios are key safety items. Seatronics informed us today that we will receive a new radio free of charge in Kirkenes. Excellent service – 28 May

Day 88. 28th of May. No paddling. Rest day in Staraya Sviritsa.

The resort where we stay has a very nice location at the riverside, good rooms and some nice cabins too.

This being Russian countryside it also has a henhouse and pigsty. During our 0800 breakfast we could hear that the pig wasn’t very happy. For good reason it turned out… It was served for dinner.

It reminded Erling of his childhood, when his grandparents raised a pig every year, and “Straums Gustav” came by in due time to do the slaughtering in their barn. Here these times coexist with the ultramodern world of I-almost everything.

Other than that it has been a quiet day in all respects. The owner ‘s wife Anna took us to the local shop for a bit of resupply. Mosquito hats were the most prized item we found.

We have prepared maps, repacked kayaks, phoned family and friends. And just rested ahead of the River Svir.

We plan to use six days, unless we are too much delayed in the locks.

We’ll pass the first lock the day after tomorrow. It will be an interesting day. Our best bet is to get a lift with another boat, as Vladimir has informed us the river authorities are skeptical about letting something as small as kayaks into the locks.

But first we hope it will be a quite ordinary day’s paddle tomorrow.

We also got good news from our VHF radio provider “Seatronics båtutstyr”. We have had problems with Erling’s radio, it turns itself on without any outside interference. It’s a concern since the VHF radios are key safety items. Seatronics informed us today that we will receive a new radio free of charge in Kirkenes. Excellent service.
